Skills Acquisition

Training Youths in Fish Hatchery and Poultry

The programme takes young people through the full cycle of two trades that pay: raising catfish from egg to table size, and keeping poultry for meat and eggs. It is built for participants who have finished school with no capital and no trade behind them.

Nobody sits and watches. Trainees handle the broodstock themselves, work through the hatchery practicals, grade fingerlings, and go into a working layer house to see how a pen is actually run day to day.

What the training covers:

  • Catfish breeding — selecting broodstock, induced spawning and hatchery management
  • Nursery and grow-out — feeding, water quality, grading and stocking density
  • Poultry keeping — housing, brooding, vaccination and handling eggs for market
  • Running it as a business — costing a pond or pen, keeping records and finding buyers
